Finding a Balance Between Recreation and Water Quality
Location: Westminster, CO
Standley Lake Regional Park is a beloved open space in Westminster, Colorado, known for its natural beauty, recreational amenities, and stunning foothill views. With history stretching back more than a century, the park now serves as a vital drinking water source for three Colorado cities, as well as a year-round destination for activities on and around the lake.
In recent years, the need for more efficient access to amenities and improved water quality has become increasingly important. Through a thoughtful comprehensive planning process, Stream is supporting the park’s long-term vision for improved accessibility and sustainability, while protecting what makes Standley Lake special today.
As part of the planning effort to improve water quality, the Stream worked with the engineer to develop a solution that uses a decommissioned ditch to divert runoff away from the lake, into the Mandalay Ditch. Other design concepts explored opportunities to improve wash station circulation, enhance trails and parking, and expand the future nature center campus—opening the door for new activities and gathering spaces.
