Streestscape and Transportation Landscape Planning and Design for Airport Connector Parkway in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs, Colorado

The Milton E. Proby Parkway is a new and prominent roadway connection to the busy Colorado Springs Airport. The two-mile long expressway provided a unique opportunity for designers to create a memorable gateway to the City for visitors and residents alike. A unified design of bridge structures, sound walls, and landscape emphasized the geology, flora and expansiveness of the Colorado Springs environment. The design is characterized by large masses of trees and shrubs, bold bridge detailing, and simple lines that frame dramatic views to the adjacent mountains while also providing a dynamic and interesting fore and middle ground. The improvements use many regionally sourced materials, and were designed to require very little maintenance and supplemental irrigation.
